Pilot Custom 823 – a high-capacity pen for extended writing

Pilot Custom 823 is one of the most highly regarded fountain pens in the Japanese Custom collection. Its classic rounded profile, transparent resin body and elegant gold-tone details are complemented by a high-capacity vacuum filling mechanism, making it particularly suitable for frequent and extended writing.

The pen fills directly from a bottle using a plunger housed inside the barrel. Pulling out and then pressing down the plunger creates a vacuum that draws ink into the reservoir. This system holds considerably more ink than a conventional cartridge or converter, while the transparent body allows the ink level and colour to remain visible.

The Custom 823 is fitted with a large size No. 15 14-carat gold nib. It provides a smooth and refined writing experience with a pleasant degree of responsiveness. The screw cap helps protect the nib from drying out, while the reservoir shut-off system restricts the movement of ink during transport.

For longer writing sessions, the end knob should be loosened slightly to allow ink to flow freely from the reservoir to the nib. It can be tightened again after writing to separate the main ink supply from the feed system.
