A Wren that gives disposable pens a second life

Tom’s Studio Wren Write Off is based on the refillable Wren pen but takes its original idea a step further. While the aluminium body can be refilled again and again with bottled ink, the cap of this special edition is made from plastic recovered from discarded disposable pens and markers.

Tom’s Studio developed the project in collaboration with British studio Brothers Make. Used pens and other plastic stationery are collected from schools and organisations before they reach landfill. The material is then carefully sorted by colour, cleaned, shredded, injection-moulded and hand-finished.

Every pen is unique

The Funfetti version combines a light recycled-plastic base with irregular colourful fragments. Their distribution occurs naturally during production, so the appearance of every cap is slightly different. Product photographs are therefore illustrative – these subtle variations are part of the character of this edition.

Refill with bottled ink

Like the standard Wren, the Write Off uses a removable fibre reservoir that fills directly with bottled ink. Once it runs dry, there is no need to replace the whole pen or a disposable refill – simply add more ink and continue writing.

The Japanese-made fibre writing tip produces an approximately 0.3–0.5 mm line depending on writing pressure, giving the pen a smooth, natural feel similar to a fine rollerball or fibre-tip pen.

Which inks should you use?

Wren Write Off is primarily designed for standard dye-based fountain pen inks. Do not use shimmer inks containing particles, acrylic inks or conventional calligraphy inks, as these may clog the reservoir or tip.

For this special edition, Tom’s Studio does not recommend using Tom’s Studio No. 60 Pigment Black ink.
