Workshop: Make Your Own Paper Lampshade

Paper does not have to stay flat on the page. With a few precise folds, it can become a three-dimensional object that works with light, shadow and structure.

During this workshop with Renata Slunéčková, you will explore the world of paper folding and, over the course of two hours, create your own designer paper lampshade step by step. You will experiment with different folds, learn how to measure, score and fold paper accurately, and discover how a simple flat sheet gradually becomes a strong three-dimensional form.

The workshop is suitable even for complete beginners. It is not about speed or perfection – what matters is focused work with your hands, discovering the possibilities of paper and the joy of taking home a finished design object of your own.

How the workshop works

The workshop takes place in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Starting with your first practice folds, you will gradually work your way towards your own finished lampshade.

Introduction to the world of folded paper

At the beginning, you will be introduced to the workshop programme, briefly explore the history of paper folding and look at examples for inspiration. You will choose suitable paper and get to know the tools and equipment you will be using.

Basic folding principles

Before starting on the final object, you will try different methods of scoring and folding on papers of various weights. You will learn how paper reacts and how the precision of each step affects the final shape.

Scoring and folding the lampshade

Then the making begins. You will measure, score and gradually fold the paper according to a prepared system. A three-dimensional structure and the final shape of the lampshade will slowly emerge from the flat sheet in front of you.

Finishing and the first light

At the end, you will glue the lampshade, punch the necessary holes and add a cord to secure its final shape. You will also try the finished lampshade on a lamp socket with a bulb and see for the first time how its folds interact with light.

Who will guide you through the workshop

Your instructor, Renata

Renata Slunéčková has been returning to paper and origami throughout most of her life. Under the brand La Origa, she creates designer lampshades and three-dimensional objects from high-quality Italian paper.

In her work, she explores both the possibilities and limitations of individual folds and searches for new lighting forms for specific interiors. She also sees working with paper as a way to disconnect from the outside world for a while and focus fully on making something by hand.

“When I work with paper, I can easily disconnect from everything else. Focused handwork brings me into an almost meditative state, and I would like to share that feeling – together with the joy of the finished result – with others.”

Where the workshop takes place

All our workshops take place below deck in our kaš-mi-daš stationery universe. Beneath our stationery shop and café, we have a dedicated space where workshops and courses can take place in peace, even during regular opening hours. During the workshop, you can order a drink from our café – drinks are always included in the price.
